I don’t think I’ve bought a slogan t-shirt since I was 13 and shopped at Tammy girl. The one I can remember was a typical 90’s look- slashed sleeves fastened together with paper clips, emblazoned with bubble-gum font that read something intelligent like ‘whatever.’ Since wearing that to death, I haven’t bought another. I have always found them to be crass, and too tacky to touch.
They are creeping back into wardrobes with vengeance. And to be honest, it’s easy to see why. Slogans are used in all kinds of situations, but commonly in protest. And this is a sign of the times. Political activism has grown dramatically over the last year, and more people than ever becoming involved in protest marches. Protests over Brexit, Trump, Women’s rights, Race, Terror, and more have spurred the nation into a unified state of defiance. Slogans at the Women’s march in London to protest Trump’s treatment of them, were some of the best.
Humour, pun, sarcasm and smiling in the face of, let’s be real – fucking stupid behaviour from those in charge, has come to feel natural to us millennials. So this is why I WILL buy a slogan t-shirt this year, and it will be fucking good.
Below are some of my favourite protest slogans this year, and some of the t’s hotting up ss17. What’s yours?
